WHO IS THE WHORE?

Revelation 17:1-2 And there came one of the seven angels which had the seven vials, and talked with me, saying unto me, Come hither; I will shew unto thee the judgment of the great whore that sitteth upon many waters: 2 With whom the kings of the earth have committed fornication, and the inhabitants of the earth have been made drunk with the wine of her fornication. (KJV)

The first thing we are told about this woman is that she is a "whore", and second, that earthly kings "have committed fornication" with her, and third, that "all the inhabitants of the earth have been made drunk with the wine of her fornication". WHY would a city be called a whore and be accused of having committed fornication with kings? Such an indictment would NEVER be made of London or Moscow or Paris . . . or any other ordinary city. It would NOT make any sense at all.

Fornication and adultery are used in the Bible in BOTH the physical and the spiritual sense. Of Jerusalem God said: Isaiah 1:21 How is the faithful city become an harlot! it was full of judgment; righteousness lodged in it; but now murderers. (KJV)

Israel had been set apart by God, from all other peoples to be holy for His purposes . . . BUT, they had entered into unholy, adulterous alliances with the idols-worshiping nations around her.

Israel had "committed adultery with stones and with stocks” (Jer. 3:9); and Israel had "committed adultery with their idols " (Eze.23:37). The whole chapter of Ezekiel 16 tells of Israel's spiritual adultery in detail, both with heathen nations and with their false gods, as do many other passages.

There is no way that a city could engage in literal, fleshly sexual act, so we can only determine that John, like the prophets in the Old Testament, is using the term in its SPIRITUAL sense. The city, therefore, must claim a spiritual relationship with God. Otherwise such an allegation would be meaningless. Although it is built on seven hills, there would be no reason to accuse Rio de Janeiro of spiritual fornication. It makes no claim of having a special relationship with God. And although Jerusalem has that relationship, it CANNOT be the woman riding on the beast, because it is not built on seven hills. Neither does it meet the other standards by which this wicked woman is to be identified.

The Bible speaks often about spiritual adultery: (Judges 3:7; 1 Ki.16:31-33; Isa.1:21; 54:5; Jer.3:20; 9:2; 19:5; Eze.6:9; 16:15-19,30,32; Hos.2:2-5; 3:1-5; 9:1; Mat.6:24; John 12:31; Rom.8:7-8; Eph.2:2; Col.3:2; 2 Tim.4:10; Jam.4:4-5; 1 Pet.14-16; 1 John 2:15-17; 5:19; Rev.3:15-16).

Against only one other city in history could a charge of spiritual fornication be leveled, that being the city is Rome, and to be more exact, the Vatican City. She claims to have been the worldwide headquarters of Christianity since its beginning and maintains that claim to this day. The pope’s throne is in Rome, and he claims to be the exclusive representative of God, the vicar of Christ. Rome is the headquarters of the Roman Catholic Church. In my humble opinion, the woman, the whore, is the coming One World Church, under the authority of the Roman Catholic Church.
