Is Prayer to Mary and/or Saints Biblical?
The issue of Catholics praying to saints is one that is a jumbled up mess. The official position of the Roman Catholic Church is that Catholics do not pray TO saints or Mary, but instead that Catholics can ask saints or Mary to pray FOR them. That, to me, is still prayer!
The practice of many Catholics deviates from official Roman Catholic teaching. Many Catholics do in fact pray directly to saints and/or Mary, asking them for help. No matter if a supposed DEAD saint or Mary is being prayed to, or asked to pray, NEITHER practice has any Biblical basis.
Mary Worship is idolatry! Mary worship is a damnable heresy! (2 Pet.2:1). The Bible in NO place tells believers in Christ to pray to anyone other than Almighty God . . . NEVER to a human! The Bible in NO place encourages, NOR mentions believers asking individuals in Heaven for their prayers.
So, WHY do Catholic pray to Mary and/or dead saints, or request their prayers? Because Catholics WRONGLY consider Mary and saints as "intercessors" before God. THAT is NOT so according to the Bible! ONLY Jesus Christ holds the office of Intercessor! NO one else!
Isaiah 53:12 Therefore will I divide him a portion with the great, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong; because he hath poured out his soul unto death: and he was numbered with the transgressors; and he bare the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors. (KJV)
John 16:23 And in that day ye shall ask me nothing. Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall ask the Father in my name, he will give it you. (KJV)
John 16:26-27 At that day ye shall ask in my name: and I say not unto you, that I will pray the Father for you: 27 For the Father himself loveth you, because ye have loved me, and have believed that I came out from God. (KJV)
Romans 8:27 And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God. (KJV)
Romans 8:34 Who is he that condemneth? It is Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us. (KJV)
1 Timothy 2:5 For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus; (KJV)
Hebrews 7:24-25 But this man, because he continueth ever, hath an unchangeable priesthood.
25 Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them. (KJV)
Hebrews 9:24 For Christ is not entered into the holy places made with hands, which are the figures of the true; but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God for us: (KJV)
1 John 2:1-2 My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous: 2 And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world. (KJV)
Catholics believe that a saint (a supposed saint who is glorified in Heaven), has a better chance to access God than we do. This is NOT so! (Rom.5:1-2). Because of this false belief, IF a dead saint delivers a prayer to God, it would be more effective than for us to pray to God directly. This idea is NOT at all Biblical. The BIBLE tells us that we can approach the throne of grace with confidence. Romans 5:1-2 Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ:
2 By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God. (KJV) . . . We can go DIRECTLY to God the Father in prayer and excpect He will answer us!!!!
(KJV)
Hebrews 4:16 Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need. (KJV)
TRUE Believers have the right to do this because of JESUS!!!
Again, I bring you: Romans 5:1-2 Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ: 2 By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God. (KJV)
We do NOT need Mary or dead saints! We go directly to God the Father or to His only begotten Son, Jesus, Who is also God! http://www.hisservants.org/is_jesus_god_h_s.htm
My dear friend, God does not answer prayers based on who is praying. God answers prayers based on whether the prayers are asked according to His will (1 John 5:14-15). There is absolutely NO need to pray to anyone other than God! The Bible gives us NO reason to ask those who are in Heaven to pray for us. Only God can hear our prayers. Only God can answer our prayers. NO one in Heaven has more access to God's throne of grace than we do through proper prayer!
