Being
Humble, Meek
Let’s
say that two angels were called by God to go to the Earth; each
one was given a job of his own. The one was given the task of
helping someone in a luxurious and comfortable home; the other
was to go to skid-row to help a drunk on a cold and wicked street.
Do you think it would make any difference to either of the angels
which job was given to him? NO! Absolutely not! Because it is the joy of ALL
the holy angels to obey God’s will. To
be humble is to have a low opinion of one’s
self. It is being modest and lowly, with a character that seeks
God’s glory and not one’s own glory. Humility withdraws itself as much as possible, from the
public spotlight. It never seeks publicity nor does it ever
hunt for high places of privilege, and it does NOT prefer popularity
or fame. Being humble is being reserved, modest and self-abased. It devaluates its
qualities and gives all the glory to God. Humility never exalts itself in the eyes of others. Modesty is one of
its greatest characteristics. There is no pride whatsoever in humility, no self-conceit
and no self-praise. Humility’s nature is to praise others but
more so, God. Humility does not exalt itself, nor does it love the uppermost seats
nor lust for high places of honor. It is willing to take the
lowliest seat and prefers those places where it will be unnoticed. Humility has its
eyes on God and others, not self. Being
humble is being poor in spirit, meek
in conduct and lowly in heart.
The
parable of the Pharisee and publican is a brief sermon from
our Lord, Jesus on self-praise and humility.
The Pharisee was extremely proud and self-conceited, seeing
only his own self-righteous deeds. He boldly listed his virtues
before God, and he scorned the poor publican who stood afar
off. He is self-centered and highly exalts himself; and he goes
away unjustified, condemned and rejected by God.
The
publican sees no good in himself, is overwhelmed by his sin,
and cannot even lift his eyes to Heaven. With a down cast face,
he smites himself on his breast, and cries out, "God
be merciful to me, a sinner."
Jesus, with great precision gives us the end result of the story
of these two men; one proud and utterly lacking any humility,
the other entirely submerged with humility and lowliness of
mind.
Luke 18:14 I tell you
this man went down to his house justified rather than the other;
for every one that exalteth himself shall be abased; and he
that humbleth himself shall be exalted. (KJV) God puts
a great price on humility.
"God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace to the humble"
(Jam. 4:6). When we pray, it brings our soul closer to God . . . that is humility, because it is saying: "Lord, I can’t do this myself."
Pride, self-esteem and self-praise automatically shuts and bolts the door
of prayer. When we want to come before the Throne of God,
we must approach Him with humbleness of mind, heart and spirit.
We must NOT be puffed-up with self-conceit, and never possess an attitude
of "me, my and mine." Humility is a wonderful Christian grace, of tremendous
price in the courts of Heaven. Humility will give us access to God when all else fails. Humility is found when we look at our Lord Jesus Christ, and we are to imitate Him!
Let’s
go back to the Pharisee and publican. Certainly the Pharisee
(religious leader) should have known how to pray, but he didn’t!
This religious scholar spoke words that were not prayer. God
heard his self-righteous words, and then condemned him. A curse
from God was on his hypocritical words. His pride poisoned his
words. His entire prayer was permeated with self-praise and
self-exaltation. God hates pride!
On
the other hand, the publican (tax collector, sinner), felt a deep sense
of remorse for his sins and his sinfulness. He realized just
how much of a sinner he really was, and that he lacked any righteous
or good qualities of his own (Isa.64:6). He falls down in abasement and
despair before God, and utters a heart-wrenching cry for mercy
for his sins and his guilt. This is the true picture of someone
who is humble.
Jesus shows us a sharp contrast between the utter worthlessness of self-righteousness,
self-exaltation, and self-praise in praying; and the tremendous
value, beauty and Divine approval which comes to humble souls. Blessed are all those who have
no righteousness of their own to flaunt (1 Cor.1:30), and no goodness of
their own of which they can boast. Humility thrives when we realize that we are sinful and unworthy of any
of God’s love, mercy and blessings. Humility blossoms when we confess all our sin, and simply trust God’s
amazing grace. Being humble is
looking at God and His holiness; then seeing self and mankind’s
utter wickedness (Jer.17:9). Humility never wants the spotlight, and dreads
any glory directed its way. It respects the integrity of others,
excuses their faults and weaknesses, pardons injuries, and has
no fear of disrespect.
Humility knows and reveres the immeasurable riches of the Cross of Christ.
It hates the honor and fame of those qualities admired by mankind,
but loves the virtues that are prized by God. Even with its
faults it is comforted, for it realizes that no one is perfect,
other than Almighty God.
Pride
and/or vanity will never be successful in prayer. But, humility is much more than just the absence of pride and vanity. It is
a powerful force that energizes prayer. Prayer has absolutely NO power to ascend to God without humility. Humility begins with a low estimate of ourselves and
of what we deserve.
The
Pharisee prayed with NO humility whatsoever, but the publican prayed with sincere humility. Being humble is feeling small,
because we are small. Being humble sees our unworthiness, because
we are unworthy. Being humble is declaring we are sinners, because
we are sinners. Kneeling is a marvelous gesture of prayer, because
it so beautifully expresses our humility.
Humility is a tremendous virtue of true "born
again" believers,
and a great virtue of Christ-like praying; because there simply
is NO Christ without humility, and there is NO successful prayer
without humility. If you want to learn how to pray, simply learn humility.
Let
my Lord Jesus be my All in All, every single day that I live.
Brokenness
Brokenness
= contrite. Contrite = repentant, regretful, sorry, penitent,
humbled, remorseful. Brokenness also = conviction of sin. Conviction
= To feel guilt and remorse after committing wrongdoing. To
feel genuine sorrow and concern over one’s sinful condition
and unworthiness before God. It is humility before God. The
Holy Spirit is responsible for this conviction in the life of
the unbeliever (John 16:8).
The
Holy Spirit wants us to have a broken and contrite heart. He
wants our submission, and truly strives for that in lives of
believers. Someone once said: “The Lord was looking for
a person weak enough to use, and He found me.” D.L. Moody
fittingly said, “We may easily be too big for God to use,
but never too small.”
Job
28 describes the way of the wind and the water and the lightning.
The way of the wind is that of easiest motion. The way of the
water is that of the easiest route. The way of the lightning
is that of easiest yielding. In other words the wind, water
and lightning take the line of least resistance. Can’t
we learn a most valuable lesson from these? In believer’s
lives, the Holy Spirit always strives for the line of least
resistance to the will of God. When He finds the absence of
resistance, this gives the Holy Spirit an opportunity to transform
weakness into strength. On the other hand, when a person hard-heartedly
resists the Spirit, refusing to give in, refusing to submit
(cooperate voluntarily), the heart of this person grows harder
and more callused with each passing day.
Psalm
34:18 The Lord is nigh unto them that are of a
broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit. (KJV)
The
Lord is close to the brokenhearted; He preserves those who are
crushed in spirit. At times daily frustrations wear us down.
We have pain, grief, loss, sorrow, and failure. God promises
to be close to the brokenhearted, meaning that He will be our
source of power, courage, and wisdom. He will help us through
our problems, not always by taking the problem away, but
walking with us through them. Don’t get frustrated or angry with God. Instead, admit
that you need God’s help and thank Him for being by your
side. If
a person is willing to be humble, come to the Lord as a sinner
and trust Him, the Lord will always be near to him/her.
Psalm 51:17 The sacrifices of God are a
broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt
not despise. (KJV)
The
sacrifice God wants from us is a broken spirit, and a broken
and repentant heart. These He will not despise. You can never
please God by outward actions, no matter how good, if your heart
is not right with God. Are you sorry for your sin? Will you
really stop? God is pleased by this kind of humility.
Isaiah 57:15 For thus saith the high and
lofty One that inhabiteth eternity, whose name is Holy; I dwell
in the high and holy place, with him also that is of a contrite
and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to
revive the heart of the contrite ones. (KJV)
What
a wonderful description of God! The high and lofty one who inhabits
eternity. Our Holy God says that He lives in that high and holy
place with those whose spirits are contrite and humble. He will
refresh the humble and give new courage to those with repentant
hearts. God relates to those who are humble and repentant (contrite). This awesome and amazing, high
and holy God came down to our level to save us because it is
impossible for us to go up to His level to save ourselves (2
Chron. 6:18; Psalm 51:1-7; Phil. 2). God comforts His own because
of Who He is . . . “the high and lofty One.”
He is the God of eternity. How feeble man is with his threescore
years and ten down here. We don’t last very long on Earth.
But this eternal God promises to take those who do not trust
in themselves, but trust in Him, and He covers them as a mother
hen covers her brood (Deut.32:11; Ps.36:7; 91:1). What peace and security there is for those
who submit to God, for those who trust in Him and not themselves.
Isaiah
66:2 For all those things hath mine hand made,
and all those things have been, saith the Lord: but to this
man will I look, even to him that is poor and of a contrite
spirit, and trembleth at my word. (KJV)
All
things in Heaven and Earth, were made by God, and they are His! He will bless those who have humble
and contrite hearts, who tremble at His Word. The God who created this vast universe, is above and
beyond it, yet He condescends (lowers Himself) to dwell with
the humble and contrite of heart.
I cannot even begin to comprehend this marvelous fact. God is SO good!
There are
two ways of living:
- #1
that of humble persons who have a deep reverence for God
and His Word and how they apply this belief, trust and reverence to their life, and
- #2
there is the way of those who choose to do their own thing
and disrespect and disobey God.
God
shows mercy to the humble,
but He curses the proud and self-sufficient (Luke 1:51-53).
Our society urges us to be confident and to trust in ourselves,
the absolute opposite of what God wants for us. Do NOT
let your freedom and right to choose lead you away from God’s
path to eternal life (Mat.7:13-14; John 3:15-18; 5:24; 14:6; Acts 4:12).
What
is the opposite of brokenness? Hardness of heart;
the dulling of one’s spiritual perception; a built-up
stubbornness or hostility toward the will and ways of God. Proud,
conceited, boastful, arrogant, scornful, self-sufficient, egotistical,
self-satisfied. It is saying “I don’t need God,
I can do it myself!” “God is just a crutch to weak
people.” “What I have, I got myself.” Millions have this attitude! I will
list many verses below.

Cor. 4:4 In whom the god of this world hath blinded
the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious
gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto
them. (KJV)
Satan,
the god of this evil world, has blinded the minds of those who
refuse to believe. Their hearts become hard, cold, unfeeling
and callused, after repeated refusals and rejections of Christ
that they are unable to see the glorious light of the Gospel
that is shining upon them. They don’t understand because
they keep refusing to listen to the Holy Spirit. Money, power,
fame and pleasure blinds people to the light of Christ’s
Gospel. Those who reject Christ and follow their own pursuits
have made Satan their god, and will end up where he is going.
Matthew
25:41 Then shall
he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed,
into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels: (KJV)
Matthew
25:46 And these shall
go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into
life eternal. (KJV)
There most certainly
is a Hell!
Ephes.
4:18 Having the understanding darkened, being alienated
from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them,
because of the blindness of their heart: (KJV)
Their
closed and blocked minds are full of darkness; they are far
away from the life of God because they have shut their minds
and hardened their hearts against Him.
Jeremiah
4:3 For thus saith the Lord to the men of Judah
and Jerusalem, Break up your fallow ground, and sow not among
thorns. (KJV)
We
must break up the hardness of our hearts as a plow breaks up
unplowed ground. People’s hearts become hardened to God’s
will after repeatedly rejecting Jesus. We need to remove the
sin that hardens our hearts before the good seed of God’s
commands can take root. We also must remove any heart-hardening
sin if we expect God’s Word to ever take root and grow
in our lives. Sin and evil makes a person God’s enemy (Rom.5:1).
To become His friend, get rid of all known sin in your life.
Allow only good and right things to grow in your heart and life.
God
hardens hearts of people when they keep refusing to believe
in Christ. Does He deliberately prevent these people from believing
in Him? NO! Absolutely NOT! He simply accepts the foolish choices they make.
Many spend a lifetime resisting God, becoming so set in their
ways that they no longer even want to understand the Gospel.
With people like this, it is essentially impossible to come
to God . . . because their hearts have been forever hardened.
Other instances of hardened hearts because of constant stubbornness
are recorded in Exodus 9:12; Romans 1:24-28; 2 Thes. 2:8-12;
and Hebrews 3:7-19.
Hebrews
3:12-14 Take heed, brethren, lest there be in any
of you an evil heart of unbelief, in departing from the living
God. [13] But exhort one another daily, while it is called To
day; lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of
sin. [14] For we are made partakers of Christ, if we hold the
beginning of our confidence stedfast unto the end; (KJV)
Beware! Be very careful! Make sure that your own hearts are not evil and unbelieving,
turning you away from the living God. Make sure you are not
deceived by sin and hardened against God. If you trust God and
go to Him with a broken and contrite heart, blessings beyond
your wildest dreams await; both in this life and the one to
come.
Meekness and humility
is another quality of a broken and contrite heart.

Chron. 36:12 And he did that which was evil in
the sight of the Lord his God, and humbled not himself before
Jeremiah the prophet speaking from the mouth of the Lord. (KJV)
Many
people do evil in the sight of the Lord, and refuse to humble
themselves in the Presence of the Lord.
Jeremiah
50:31 Behold, I am against thee, O thou most proud,
saith the Lord God of hosts: for thy day is come, the time that
I will visit thee. (KJV)
Almighty
God is the enemy (Rom.5:10), of all who are proud and refuse
to submit to Him; all who do not have a broken and contrite
heart. Judgment is sure upon all these people.

Tim. 3:2 For men shall be lovers of their own selves,
covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents,
unthankful, unholy, (KJV)
This
verse is speaking of the “end times” in which we
are living. People love only themselves and their money. They
are boastful and proud, scoffing at God, disobedient to their
parents, and ungrateful. They consider nothing sacred.
James
4:6 But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith,
God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble.
(KJV)
The
Lord gives us strength to stand against evil desires. God sets
Himself against the proud, but
He bestows grace on the humble.
1
Samuel 2:3 Talk no more so exceeding proudly; let
not arrogancy come out of your mouth: for the Lord is a God
of knowledge, and by him actions are weighed. (KJV)
So
many people act proud and haughty! They speak with such arrogance!
The Lord is a God who knows what you do and say and think; and
He will judge you for what you have done.
Psalm
12:4 Who have said, With our tongue will we prevail;
our lips are our own: who is lord over us? (KJV)
A lot
of people will tell a lie even if the truth fits better. “I
can say whatever I like,” they say. “Who is lord
over me?”
Psalm
94:4 How long shall they utter and speak hard things?
and all the workers of iniquity boast themselves? (KJV)
Hear
their arrogance! How these proud, evildoers boast!
Proverbs
8:13 The fear of the Lord is to hate evil: pride,
and arrogancy, and the evil way, and the froward mouth, do I
hate. (KJV)
All
who fear (reverence, respect) the Lord will hate evil, because
He hates evil! We must hate pride, arrogance, corruption, and
perverted speech.
Isaiah
13:11 And I will punish the world for their evil,
and the wicked for their iniquity; and I will cause the arrogancy
of the proud to cease, and will lay low the haughtiness of the
terrible. (KJV)
The
Lord will punish the world for its evil, and every
wicked person for their sin. He will crush the arrogance of
the proud and the contempt of the mighty.
Proverbs
18:12 Before destruction the heart of man is haughty,
and before honour is humility. (KJV)
Haughtiness
goes before destruction; humility goes before honor.
Proverbs
26:12 Seest thou a man wise in his own conceit?
there is more hope of a fool than of him. (KJV)
There
is more hope for fools than for people who think they know it
all.
Isaiah
5:21 Woe unto them that are wise in their own eyes,
and prudent in their own sight! (KJV)
Destruction
is certain for those proud ones who think they are wise.
Galatians
6:3 For if a man think himself to be something,
when he is nothing, he deceiveth himself. (KJV)
If
you think you are too famous or important to help someone in
need, you deceive only yourself. You really are a nobody.
Deut.
8:17 And thou say in thine heart, My power and
the might of mine hand hath gotten me this wealth. (KJV)
Many
people think that it was their own strength, wisdom and energy
that made them wealthy. WRONG!! God does allow
many unbelievers to be rich and famous, but, that’s all
they will ever have! It will not follow them to eternal Hell.
Isaiah
5:14 Therefore hell hath enlarged herself, and
opened her mouth without measure: and their glory, and their
multitude, and their pomp, and he that rejoiceth, shall descend
into it. (KJV)
Most
rich and famous and powerful politicians will end up in Hell (Isa.5:14).
Her great and proud ones will be swallowed up, with all her
drunken crowds. See: Lusting after riches.
It
is VERY difficult to get people to understand that there REALLY is a Hell and that MOST people will
go there.
Matthew
7:13-14 Enter ye
in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the
way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go
in thereat: [14] Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the
way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it. (KJV)
We
must enter at the strait gate. Strait = hard, difficult, narrow.
This is expressing the difficulty of the first
right step in salvation. For wide is the gate (easily entered) and broad is
the way (easy to travel), that leadeth to destruction (Hell),
and many there be which go in thereat. Yes, strait is the gate,
and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life . . . but, it’s
only as difficult as the first step. Few
there be that find it . . . the world takes
and recommends the broad way because it is easy to enter and easy
to travel, with an abundance of company. It is like sailing
with a good wind and favorable tide. BUT, there is one great
disadvantage! It leadeth to
destruction (Hell). Jesus lays down the law of the kingdom,
and leaves it with us. As to the other way, the disadvantage
of it lies in its narrowness and solicitude (2 Thes.1:8-9). YOUR choice! The choice you make in this life on Earth will be an ETERNAL choice! Be VERY careful!
Its
very first step involves a complete change in all our intentions
and plans for life, and a surrender of all that is dear to our
natural preference. And my friend, all that follows that first
step is a repetition of the first act of self-sacrifice. So,
in the eyes of the world, it’s no wonder that few find
and few are found on this narrow road. But the world looks at
things SO differently than God does . . . actually completely
opposite most of the times! They look at the here and now; look
at things they can see now! They look at the pleasures the world
can offer them NOW! But, the narrow road has one advantage;

Jesus
says that both roads of life are accessed by gates. One has
a big, wide gate that leads to a broad and easily traveled road.
The other has a strait, difficult gate that leads to a narrow,
hard to travel road.
I once
read that both these roads are like funnels, and this makes sense to me. The broad road
starts out with the big end of the funnel, easy to enter
. . . but the farther you go, the smaller the road becomes and
the harder it is to get off of it. The narrow road starts out
like the small end of a funnel . . . more difficult to
enter but the longer you stay on it, the wider the road is and
much more easier to stay on . . . and soon, you have NO desire to
get off!
The
one thing we must remember is that both these roads start and
end with a gate. When our journey is ended, we come to another
gate! Those on the broad road come to the gate of Hell. Those
on the narrow road will finally come to the gate of Heaven! One word of warning, those on the broad road still have the
opportunity to exit as long as they are yet alive. Once
a person dies, there is no changing your mind.
Hebrews 9:27 And as it is appointed unto
men once to die, but after this the judgment: (KJV)
There
are NO second chances! When you die, your soul either goes to
Heaven OR Hell! God gives you this time on Earth to decide where
you will spend eternity. And YES! Your soul is eternal! It will
live forever in one of two places. Your choice!
Those
with broken and contrite hearts live a life for Jesus, a life
of self-sacrifice, NOT a life of self-centeredness and self-sufficiency!
How is your heart this day? Is it broken? Is it contrite? Or
is it hard and callused with no desire for God at all?

Have
you ever thought about the “beauty of brokenness”?
I can develop a sensitivity to Almighty God through the beauty
of brokenness. One of the great needs in the lives of believers
is the ability to develop a brokenness within the heart. We
will then become sensitive to God, to His Spirit and to the
needs of people. Very few believers have developed the ability
to size up other people in order to help them to understand
where they are coming from, what they are experiencing, what
their frustrations or pain, and troubles are, and are able to
help them.
The
church has been so “surface” and shallow, it’s
pathetic! Well, I’m going to tell you straight. The reason
for this lack of sensitivity is that believers are too concerned
with their own world and their own problems. They will never
be sensitive and broken enough to deal with others until their
selfishness has been extracted from them, and their own world
is of less importance than someone else. Listen to what Jesus
said.
Matthew
21:42-44 Jesus saith unto them, Did
ye never read in the scriptures, The stone which the builders
rejected, the same is become the head of the corner: this is
the Lord's doing, and it is marvellous in our eyes? [43] Therefore
say I unto you, The kingdom of God shall be taken from you,
and given to a nation bringing forth the fruits thereof. [44]
And whosoever shall fall on this stone shall be broken: but
on whomsoever it shall fall, it will grind him to powder. (KJV)
Where
ever we may be, there are people with needs. Many of them are
God’s children and His eye is on them (2 Chron.16:9).
The problem is that Christianity and ministry are “building
orientated.” If the situation does not present itself
within the confines of our traditional way of thinking, we will
not release the Spirit. Some believers have become so encrusted
and hard that God could drop a rock on them and they wouldn’t
feel it. They are insensitive to any touch of God.
There
is a place where once we have been dealt with by God and once
His breath comes, we instantly respond. His breath is not a
turbulent wind but a still, small voice which moves upon our
spirits many times a day to bring insight, direction and wisdom.
Always be aware however, that “insensitivity” will
not permit response. Jesus perfected this in His earthly walk.
He cultivated fellowship with the Father. His sensitivity was
so great that He could perceive the thoughts and intents of
the hearts of men. He could read lives as if he were reading
a piece of paper with detailed accuracy. He always picked upon
the hurts of people. Jesus was one of total awareness of His
purpose. Jesus says to me: “My
Presence brings My Power, My Power brings My Purpose, and My
Purpose is My people.” Being aware of
those around you comes as a result of developing the spirit
of man or woman and the brokenness.
Brokenness
is the unleashing of powers and abilities. Brokenness is being
meek and sensitive and submitting to the control of the Holy
Spirit.
Psalm
51:10 Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew
a right spirit within me. (KJV)
Psalm
51:17 The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit:
a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise.
