Is Predestination Biblical?

Romans 8:29-30  For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren. 30 Moreover whom he did predestinate, them he also called: and whom he called, them he also justified: and whom he justified, them he also glorified. (KJV)
Eph. 1:5 Having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will, (KJV)
Eph. 1:11 In whom also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestinated according to the purpose of him who worketh all things after the counsel of his own will: (KJV)
Many people have a strong resentment to the doctrine of predestination. But, predestination is a Biblical doctrine. The key is understanding what predestination means, biblically.

The word predestinate means to “determine beforehand,” “ordain,” “to decide upon ahead of time.” So, predestination is God determining certain things to occur ahead of time. What did God determine ahead of time? According to Romans 8:29-30, God predetermined that certain individuals would be conformed to the likeness of His Son, be called, justified, and glorified. In actual fact, God predetermines that certain individuals will be saved. Numerous scriptures refer to believers in Christ being chosen (Mat.24:22,31; Mk.13:20,27; Rom.8:33; 9:11; 11:5-7,28; Eph. 1:4-5,9-11; Col.3:12; 1 Thes.1:4; 1 Tim.5:21; 2 Tim.2:120 Tit.1:1; 1 Pet.1:1-2; 2 :9; 2 Pet.1:10). Predestination is the biblical doctrine that God in His sovereignty chooses certain individuals to be saved.

Most object that the doctrine of predestination is unfair. WHY would God choose certain individuals and not others? The important thing to remember is that no one deserves to be saved. We ALL have sinned (Rom.3:10,23), and ALL of us are worthy of eternal punishment (Rom.6:23). God would be perfectly just in allowing ALL of us to spend eternity in Hell. BUT, God chooses to save some of us. He is NOT being unfair to those who reject His one and only Way of salvation, because they receive what they deserve, because they have aroused God’s Holy wrath. (Ps.2:5,12; 18:7; 21 ;9; 69:24; 76:7; Jn.3:36; Rom.1:18; 2:5,8; Eph.5:6; Col.3:6; Heb.2:3; 10:29; Rev.6:16-17).

No one can comprehend the mind and mysteries of God. BUT . . . why He chooses to be gracious to some is NOT unfair to the others. If God chooses who is saved, doesn’t that throw out our free will to choose and believe in Christ? No, I do not think so.
John 7:37-38 In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink. 38  He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water. (KJV) . . . To me, this says we DO have a free will. I believe that man has a free will to do good OR evil!
Throughout Scripture the Bible continuously instructs mankind to make righteous decisions by free will. Many persons misinterpret a some verses to arrive at the false idea that mankind does not have a free will to do good or make righteous decisions. Below are some verses which strongly show that mankind has the responsibility to exercise his free will and is commanded by God to do so.
Luke 13:3 I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish.(KJV) Matthew 25:41-46 Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels: 42 For I was an hungred, and ye gave me no meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me no drink: 43 I was a stranger, and ye took me not in: naked, and ye clothed me not: sick, and in prison, and ye visited me not. 44 Then shall they also answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, or athirst, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not minister unto thee? 45 Then shall he answer them, saying, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye did it not to one of the least of these, ye did it not to me. 46 And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal. (KJV)
Ephesians 4:28  Let him that stole steal no more: but rather let him labour, working with his hands the thing which is good, that he may have to give to him that needeth. (KJV)
Ephesians 2:8-9 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: 9 Not of works, lest any man should boast. (KJV)
Acts 2:38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. (KJV)
2 Thes. 1:8 In flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ: (KJV)
Romans 12:1 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. (KJV)
John 8:24  I said therefore unto you, that ye shall die in your sins: for if ye believe not that I am he, ye shall die in your sins. (KJV)
Matthew 25:46 And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal. (KJV)
Revelation 20:14 And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. (KJV)
Revelation 21:8 But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death. (KJV)
Revelation 20:6  Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection: on such the second death hath no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with him a thousand years. (KJV)
Revelation 2:11 He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; He that overcometh shall not be hurt of the second death. (KJV)
James 2:18 Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works. (KJV)
Ephesians 2:2 Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience: (KJV)
Genesis 6:5 And GOD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. (KJV)
Genesis 19:24  Then the LORD rained upon Sodom and upon Gomorrah brimstone and fire from the LORD out of heaven; (KJV) . . . Read the entire chapter.

My thoughts on “election.” I truly do believe that God elects (chooses) everyone. And I believe that He gives each of us enough faith that we can choose to accept Jesus OR we can cast away that faith and reject Jesus. It is NOT God’s desire that ANY should perish.
Matthew 18:14 Even so it is not the will of your Father which is in heaven, that one of these little ones should perish. (KJV)
2 Peter 3:9 The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. (KJV)
