Bottomless Pit, Where is it?

What is it?

Luke 8:26-33 And they arrived at the country of the Gadarenes, which is over against Galilee. [27] And when he went forth to land, there met him out of the city a certain man, which had devils long time, and ware no clothes, neither abode in any house, but in the tombs. [28] When he saw Jesus, he cried out, and fell down before him, and with a loud voice said, What have I to do with thee, Jesus, thou Son of God most high? I beseech thee, torment me not. [29] (For he had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man. For oftentimes it had caught him: and he was kept bound with chains and in fetters; and he brake the bands, and was driven of the devil into the wilderness.) [30] And Jesus asked him, saying, What is thy name? And he said, Legion: because many devils were entered into him. [31] And they besought him that he would not command them to go out into the deep. [32] And there was there an herd of many swine feeding on the mountain: and they besought him that he would suffer them to enter into them. And he suffered them. [33] Then went the devils out of the man, and entered into the swine: and the herd ran violently down a steep place into the lake, and were choked. (KJV) Verse 31. The deep: depthless, abyss, deep, bottomless pit. It seems the “deep” was a sort of evil spirit prison, a place which evil angels dread.

2 Peter 2:4 For if God spared not the angels that sinned, but cast them down to hell, and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be reserved unto judgment; (KJV) Peter also wrote about a dungeon where evil spirits are held captive. “Hell” here is the deep abyss of Hades. Hades (the present Hell) being the holding place for unbelievers while awaiting judgment.

Jude 1:6-7 And the angels which kept not their first estate, but left their own habitation, he hath reserved in everlasting chains under darkness unto the judgment of the great day. [7] Even as Sodom and Gomorrha, and the cities about them in like manner, giving themselves over to fornication, and going after strange flesh, are set forth for an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire. (KJV) Jude also speaks of evil angels being confined in everlasting chains under darkness (the abyss).

The prophecy in Revelation tells us that in chapter 9, the bottomless pit (abyss) shall be opened at the 5th Trumpet Judgment which is the first “woe.”

Rev. 9:1-12 And the fifth angel sounded, and I saw a star fall from heaven unto the earth: and to him was given the key of the bottomless pit. [2] And he opened the bottomless pit; and there arose a smoke out of the pit, as the smoke of a great furnace; and the sun and the air were darkened by reason of the smoke of the pit. [3] And there came out of the smoke locusts upon the earth: and unto them was given power, as the scorpions of the earth have power. [4] And it was commanded them that they should not hurt the grass of the earth, neither any green thing, neither any tree; but only those men which have not the seal of God in their foreheads. [5] And to them it was given that they should not kill them, but that they should be tormented five months: and their torment was as the torment of a scorpion, when he striketh a man. [6] And in those days shall men seek death, and shall not find it; and shall desire to die, and death shall flee from them. [7] And the shapes of the locusts were like unto horses prepared unto battle; and on their heads were as it were crowns like gold, and their faces were as the faces of men. [8] And they had hair as the hair of women, and their teeth were as the teeth of lions. [9] And they had breastplates, as it were breastplates of iron; and the sound of their wings was as the sound of chariots of many horses running to battle. [10] And they had tails like unto scorpions, and there were stings in their tails: and their power was to hurt men five months. [11] And they had a king over them, which is the angel of the bottomless pit, whose name in the Hebrew tongue is Abaddon, but in the Greek tongue hath his name Apollyon. [12] One woe is past; and, behold, there come two woes more hereafter. (KJV) The bottomless pit shall be opened at the 5th Trumpet Judgment for 5 months of torture for ALL those who do not possess the seal of God in their foreheads.

The King of the abyss.

Although there are a multitude of evil angels in the abyss, we are given only the name of one spirit there: Abaddon, or Apollyon, meaning Satan (the devil).

Rev. 11:7 And when they shall have finished their testimony, the beast that ascendeth out of the bottomless pit shall make war against them, and shall overcome them, and kill them. [8] The beast that thou sawest was, and is not; and shall ascend out of the bottomless pit, and go into perdition: and they that dwell on the earth shall wonder, whose names were not written in the book of life from the foundation of the world, when they behold the beast that was, and is not, and yet is. (KJV) . . . The phrase “was, and is not; and shall ascend out of the bottomless pit” means that the beast was alive, died and then came back to life. The beast’s resurrection symbolizes the persistence of evil. “Was” speaks of the past history of the Roman Empire. “Is not” refers to the shattered present day condition of the Roman Empire (shattered but not dead). “Will come” tells of the restored Roman Empire. “Shall go into perdition” tells of the total destruction of the Roman Empire at the return of Christ. Verse 7 said the “beast that carrieth her, hath the seven heads and ten horns.” Now we get more information! “The seven heads are seven mountains.” Which well known city in the world, sits (is built) on 7 mountains? None other than Rome! Rome is where the “woman” sits, and manipulates the religions of the world. Does this sound logical to you? It does to me.

Rev. 17:3-8 So he carried me away in the spirit into the wilderness: and I saw a woman sit upon a scarlet coloured beast, full of names of blasphemy, having seven heads and ten horns. [4] And the woman was arrayed in purple and scarlet colour, and decked with gold and precious stones and pearls, having a golden cup in her hand full of abominations and filthiness of her fornication: [5] And upon her forehead was a name written, MYSTERY, BABYLON THE GREAT, THE MOTHER OF HARLOTS AND ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH. [6] And I saw the woman drunken with the blood of the saints, and with the blood of the martyrs of Jesus: and when I saw her, I wondered with great admiration. [7] And the angel said unto me, Wherefore didst thou marvel? I will tell thee the mystery of the woman, and of the beast that carrieth her, which hath the seven heads and ten horns. [8] The beast that thou sawest was, and is not; and shall ascend out of the bottomless pit, and go into perdition: and they that dwell on the earth shall wonder, whose names were not written in the book of life from the foundation of the world, when they behold the beast that was, and is not, and yet is. (KJV) Who is the scarlet colored, seven headed and 10 horned beast in chapters 13 & 17? It is the Antichrist.

Rev. 20:1 And I saw an angel come down from heaven, having the key of the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand. (KJV) The 1000 years (Millennium) is mentioned only in this 20th chapter, in the Book of Revelation; but it is mentioned 6 times, 2,3,4,5,6, & 7. An angel of God takes hold of the devil, binds him, and casts him into the “bottomless pit.” Please notice: the Bible plainly states, AN angel! One, single, solitary, lone angel controls this enemy of God! The bottomless pit represents the place of the demons and of Satan, the king of demons (Rev. 9:11).

Rev. 20:3And cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up, and set a seal upon him, that he should deceive the nations no more, till the thousand years should be fulfilled: and after that he must be loosed a little season. (KJV) When the angel throws Satan in, he shuts him up and seals him in! Satan will no longer be in the world to deceive people — not for 1000 years. The people of Earth shall have a time of peace and prosperity, but, all the trials are not over yet.

Bottomless pit and Hell are NOT the same thing.

Rev.19:19-21 And I saw the beast, and the kings of the earth, and their armies, gathered together to make war against him that sat on the horse, and against his army. [20] And the beast was taken, and with him the false prophet that wrought miracles before him, with which he deceived them that had received the mark of the beast, and them that worshipped his image. These both were cast alive into a lake of fire burning with brimstone. [21]And the remnant were slain with the sword of him that sat upon the horse, which sword proceeded out of his mouth: and all the fowls were filled with their flesh. [KJV] The battle lines have been drawn. The greatest confrontation in the history of the world is about to begin. The beast (the Antichrist) and the false prophet have gathered the rulers and armies of the entire Earth. The enemy armies think they have come of their own free will, but in reality, God has gathered them to battle, that He might defeat them. Their pride and rebellion have clouded their thinking, that they could possibly go up against God Himself. There really is no fight, because the victory was won when Jesus died on the cross for sin and rose from the dead. The evil leaders are immediately captured and sent to their punishment, and the forces of evil are slaughtered. The fiery lake of burning sulfur (Hell) is the final destination of ALL the wicked. This lake is different from the Abyss (bottomless pit) referred to in Rev. 9:1.The Antichrist and the false prophet are thrown into this lake of fire (Hell). The people were not excused because they did what their leaders asked them. The plea of millions of sinners on that great day will go unheard! God has given us His Word as a warning and Guide. If you choose to follow wrong guides on wrong roads, which most people travel; you must go where the most go, to the burning lake. I distinctly remember several years ago I was bringing a lesson to a class on these very verses. One woman sat across from me in every class. The next week, she was absent (extremely rare). After class I went to see her. These verses had terrified and convicted her. It was only a matter of minutes that she had accepted Christ as her Saviour and Lord. God does work in mysterious ways, for this dear soul passed away very shortly afterwards.

Rev. 20:10 And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever. (KJV) Satan’s power is NOT eternal. He shall meet his doom. A lot of people are under the impression that the devil is in Hell today. This is not so! It shall be in the future, as this verse states, that God will send him there for eternity. But, as for today, the devil is enjoying his short-lived power over the world. He began his evil work in mankind at the beginning (Genesis 3:1-6) and relentlessly continues it today, but he will have eternal destruction when he is thrown into the lake of fire and brimstone (Hell). The devil will be released from the Abyss (“his prison,” Rev. 20:7), but he shall NEVER be released from Hell.

Once Satan is in Hell, he will never ever be a threat to anyone ever again.

Rev. 20:14-15 And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. [15] And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire. (KJV) Death, the final enemy of man, is removed; there will be no more death! Hades, translated Hell in the New Testament, is the prison where lost souls are kept until this Judgment. The lost will no longer be in temporary Hades, but be transferred to the eternal Lake of Fire (Hell). God’s judgment is finished. The Lake of Fire is the ultimate destination of everything wicked; Satan, the beast, the false prophet, the demons, death, Hades, and all those whose names are not recorded in the Book of Life. Only faith in Jesus Christ can place your name in this Book. There are NO gray areas in God’s judgment! NO maybes! NO sitting on the fence! NO closet Christians! If you have NOT confessed Christ as your personal Saviour and Lord, there will be NO hope of Heaven, NO second chance, NO appeals.
