Listening to God is absolutely necessary to walk with God
Psalm 50:7 Hear, O my people, and I will speak; O Israel, and I will testify against thee: I am God, even thy God. (KJV)
Psalm 81:8 Hear, O my people, and I will testify unto thee: O Israel, if thou wilt hearken unto me; (KJV)
Psalm 81:13 Oh that my people had hearkened unto me, and Israel had walked in my ways! (KJV)
Exodus 15:26 And said, If thou wilt diligently hearken to the voice of the LORD thy God, and wilt do that which is right in his sight, and wilt give ear to his commandments, and keep all his statutes, I will put none of these diseases upon thee, which I have brought upon the Egyptians: for I am the LORD that healeth thee. (KJV)
Deut.5:27 Go thou near, and hear all that the LORD our God shall say: and speak thou unto us all that the LORD our God shall speak unto thee; and we will hear it, and do it. (KJV)
1 John 5:9 If we receive the witness of men, the witness of God is greater: for this is the witness of God which he hath testified of his Son. (KJV)
One of the most important lessons we can learn is HOW to listen to God. In our hectic lives, nothing is more urgent, nothing is more needed, and nothing more rewarding than hearing what God has to say to us and obeying Him.
A right conversation involves both talking and listening. Most of us do better with the talking. Maybe we had better start listening more to what God is saying to us.
Does the Lord really speak to us today? The Bible assures us that He does. The book of Hebrews opens this way:
Hebrews 1:1-2 God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, 2 Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds; (KJV) . . . Our God is NOT silent. He is very much alive and active. He speaks to us individually (One-on-one) and in a way that we can hear Him, receive His message, and obey Him. He is endless, immeasurable, and He is fully capable of communicating with each of us, right where we are, in the midst of our circumstances, and in a very personal way.
This may be one of the most important ideas you will grab hold of in learning HOW to listen to God. When the Lord speaks, He is speaking to you. The Word of God, the Bible contains His TRUTH! You must take it personally. Allow His Holy Spirit to open your heart so you will have a deeper understanding of Scripture. When you do, you can begin to claim His Promises for your life. You also will gain a deeper understanding of His provision, care and love. God is very serious about His relationship with you. It needs to be both ways! You must be very serious about your relationship with Him!
When God speaks, it is for YOUR benefit, and it is very important for you to listen to Him and respond in obedience. Sometimes He will test you to change your thinking or to release certain unhealthy feelings and opinions. Sometimes He will command you to change features of your behavior. But every instruction He ever gives, you can be sure it is for your good. He wants to encourage and perfect you so that you might live with greater joy and strength. And He also wants to transform you into the likeness of His Son, Jesus Christ, and helping you to become the very best you can be.
Learning to LISTEN to God through the reading of His Word is the most important thing you can do because there is NO other way to enjoy the amazingly wonderful abundant life He offers. Pay close attention to all that He has to say! Jeremiah 33:3 Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and shew thee great and mighty things, which thou knowest not. (KJV)
